En la pesca del atún en las aguas del Océano Pacífico Oriental se utilizan los Dispositivos Agregadores de Peces (DAPs), estas estructuras flotantes son útiles para esta actividad, pues producen una sombra que atrae peces y otras especies.
En los últimos años esta práctica ha ido regulándose a fin de reducir los impactos ambientales de estos dispositivos.Desde el 2019, por ejemplo, la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical (CIAT) ha firmado acuerdos con diferentes países para utilizar FADs no enmallantes y biodegradables. En Ecuador desde el 2021 los atuneros de TUNACONS lideran esta iniciativa con el uso de dispositivos agregadores de peces elaborados con materiales cien por ciento de origen vegetal.
Las flotas de barcos atuneros de cerco de las cinco empresas fundadoras de TUNACONS empezaron el 2022 cumpliendo con su compromiso de reemplazar el 20% de los DAPs o plantados, que normalmente se elaboran de material sintético, por versiones eco-amigables, denominados EcoFADs. Estas nuevas versiones están elaboradas en fibra vegetal como cáñamo de manila o abacá, las mismas que son resistentes a la salinidad. La estructura que las sostiene está confeccionada con palo de balsa y caña.
La compañía señala que, aunque existen varias iniciativas en uso de materiales degradables en flotas de otros océanos, el compromiso formal de uso de EcoFADs los convierte en líderes en la gestión y el uso de plantados elaborados con materiales cien por ciento de origen vegetal y marca un hito hacia prácticas más sostenibles.
TUNACONS empezó como un proyecto sostenible, pero este año se formó como Fundación, por lo que se espera alcanzar la primera certificación Marine Stewardship Council para la pesca responsable para el segundo trimestre de 2022.
La Fundación está conformada por cinco miembros plenos entre nacionales y extranjeros; Negocios Industriales Real S.A., Eurofish y Servigrup de Ecuador, Pesquera Jadran de Panamá y Trimarine de EEUU. También se unieron el año pasado dos nuevos miembros adherentes que son Manacripex y Marbelize.

Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are used in tuna fishing in the waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. These floating structures are useful for this activity, as they produce a shadow that attracts fish and other species.
In recent years this practice has been regulated in order to reduce the environmental impacts of these devices.Since 2019, for example, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) has signed agreements with different countries to use non-entangling and biodegradable FADs. In Ecuador since 2021, TUNACONS tuna vessels have been leading this initiative with the use of fish aggregating devices made from 100 percent plant-based materials.
The fleets of tuna purse seiners of the five founding companies of TUNACONS began in 2022 fulfilling their commitment to replace 20% of the FADs, which are normally made of synthetic material, with eco-friendly versions, called EcoFADs. These new versions are made of vegetable fiber such as manila hemp or abaca, which are resistant to salinity. The structure that supports them is made of balsa wood and cane.
The company points out that, although there are several initiatives in the use of degradable materials in fleets in other oceans, the formal commitment to use EcoFADs makes them leaders in the management and use of FADs made from 100 percent plant-based materials and marks a milestone towards more sustainable practices.
TUNACONS began as a sustainable project, but this year it was formed as a Foundation, which is expected to achieve the first Marine Stewardship Council certification for responsible fishing by the second quarter of 2022.
The Foundation is made up of five full members among nationals and foreigners; Negocios Industriales Real S.A., Eurofish and Servigrup from Ecuador, Pesquera Jadran from Panama and Trimarine from the USA. Two new adherent members, Manacripex and Marbelize, also joined last year.
