Tuna fishing using big lures called DAP or FAD

TUNACONS is an association of five large fishing companies and therefore represents their interests. It is headquartered in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, but on its payroll there is one US company (Tri Marine) and one Panamanian (Servigrup). The other three are Ecuadorian (Nirsa, Grupo Jadram and Eurofish).

The group, as is to be expected, is working fervently to make its way into the lucrative international tuna fishing market, and with that eagerness it is trying to align itself with the official organizations that promote legal and nature-friendly fishing, although it is farther from the latter.

These days he is determined to move forward with his project to reduce the use of synthetic FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) and replace them with others made of biodegradable material (FADs, also called “FADs”, are large buoys that provide shade under which small fish swirl. These schools attract the larger species, such as tuna, sharks and others that fishing boats go after. After leaving them floating in the high seas for a few days, the boats set nets around the DAPs and catch the swarming fish).

TUNACONS plans to reduce the use of synthetic FADs by 20% by the end of 2020, replacing them with “EcoFADs” of its own manufacture. However, marine biologists, experts in fisheries, consider that the use of biodegradable FADs is not enough to protect and preserve marine life, because the severity of predation occurs when fishing nets indiscriminately trap all the species attracted by these devices.

But the association boasts about its project and says that “there is no mention of anything similar in any other ocean,” referring to the Pacific. It adds that it is the first group of ships to make a commitment to take on 100% degradable FADs to reduce pollution in the oceans.

He says he has been researching materials for three years to develop prototypes that reduce the use of synthetic material; and that his degradable FAD, named by TUNACONS as “EcoFAD”, has already demonstrated efficiency in catches.

He reveals that, with support from the EPO (Eastern Pacific Ocean) Tuna Commission and funding from the European Union, they are conducting a technical cooperation to compare the efficiency between “EcoFADs” and traditional FADs. Currently, the data show that they are on the right track and that EcoFADs do not underfish traditional FADs and therefore promising results are expected.

However, TUNACONS reasons that, being the interest of its fleet to minimize the impact of the purse seine fishery on the marine ecosystem, it will be convenient to cooperate and implement national and international scientific and technological research projects, in order to define in the medium term prototypes of 100% degradable FADs.
