The 102nd meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) is underway in Panama, where critical issues such as marine pollution, the protection of vulnerable species like sharks, turtles, and manta rays, and the sustainable management of one of the Eastern Pacific’s most important fisheries—tuna—are being discussed.

Delegates from 21 countries, including Ecuador, the European Union, the United States, and various nations from Asia and Latin America, have gathered to debate and make key decisions to strengthen fisheries management in the region. The conservation of tropical and temperate tunas is at the heart of this meeting, where member countries aim to reach agreements that ensure the long-term sustainability of these vital marine resources.

Ecuador, a leader in purse seine tuna fishing, plays a prominent role in this international forum. Ecuadorian fisheries authorities, experts, and industry leaders are deeply engaged in discussions and negotiations, all with the goal of advancing sustainability in the tuna industry.

Tunacons is also present at this significant event, supporting the Ecuadorian delegation. Our Director has been actively participating in several discussions and presented updates on the project to collect drifting fish aggregation devices (FADs) in the marine and coastal zones of the Galápagos Islands—an initiative aimed at reducing the impact of fishing on local ecosystems.

We are confident that this meeting will result in meaningful agreements that will help maintain healthy marine ecosystems and ensure the future of tuna fisheries in the region.

La 102ª reunión de la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical (CIAT) se lleva a cabo en Panamá, donde temas cruciales como la contaminación marina, la protección de especies vulnerables como tiburones, tortugas y mantarrayas, y la gestión sostenible de una de las pesquerías más importantes del Pacífico Oriental —el atún— son el centro del debate.

Delegados de 21 países, entre ellos Ecuador, la Unión Europea, Estados Unidos y varias naciones de Asia y Latinoamérica, están reunidos para discutir y tomar decisiones clave que fortalezcan la gestión de las pesquerías en la región. La conservación de los atunes tropicales y templados es uno de los pilares centrales de este encuentro, donde los países miembros buscan establecer acuerdos que garanticen la sostenibilidad a largo plazo de estos recursos marinos.

Ecuador, líder en pesca de atún con red de cerco, participa de manera destacada en esta importante cita internacional. Las autoridades pesqueras, expertos y empresarios ecuatorianos están inmersos en intensas negociaciones y discusiones, con el objetivo de avanzar en la sostenibilidad de la industria atunera.

Tunacons también está presente en este importante foro, apoyando a la delegación ecuatoriana. Nuestro director ha participado activamente en diversas reuniones y, además, presentó los avances del proyecto de recolección de plantados en las zonas marino-costeras de las Islas Galápagos, un esfuerzo que busca reducir el impacto de la pesca sobre los ecosistemas locales.

Our crew members are trained to act quickly and ensure that all sharks are returned to the sea when they get caught in the nets during fishing. We collaborate with scientists and technicians to continuously improve our techniques and reduce the impact on the marine ecosystem. At Tunacons, we are dedicated to protecting marine life for future generations.

Sharks sometimes swim alongside schools of tuna and can end up getting caught in the nets—a phenomenon known as bycatch. But rest assured, we don’t leave them to their fate.

With responsible and respectful practices, our crew members are trained to act quickly, ensuring that all sharks are returned to the sea. Every shark released is a testament to our commitment to marine life and sustainable fishing practices.

Mayor Fanny from Santa Cruz Galapagos agree to cooperate with Tunacons sustainable actions

The Santa Cruz Municipality and the TUNACONS Foundation meet to discuss key areas where the local government can collaborate with the Caring for Galápagos Initiative. These efforts focus on reducing marine pollution through the collection of fishing gear and underwater and coastal debris, as well as the development of fishery improvement projects for Galápagos’ artisanal fisheries.

With the hashtag “Encebollado Now a Heritage,” Nirsa and Real invited us to an incredible event to celebrate this well-deserved title. It was a feast of flavors, history, and culture!

Roberto Aguirre Jr., the current Director of Operations at NIRSA, kicked off the event by reminding us that back in 2007—17 years ago!—the company started canning this delicious dish from Guayaquil. Its fame has grown, and last year, we made it to the ranking of the best soup in the world! 🌍🍲 Just a few weeks ago, it was even featured at the National Geographic Food Festival! 🌎✨

But encebollado has deeper roots: it was once known as “picante de yuca” or “picante de pescado,” and it was served in traditional picanterías. We can’t forget its healing properties for the dreaded “chuchaqui”—a true culinary marvel with benefits.

During the event, we heard from an anthropologist and a historian, who revealed that encebollado has fascinating historical roots, dating back to the Valdivia culture in the form of a fish soup. 🏺🍲

In the words of the Minister of Tourism, encebollado is a way to bring families together, whether served with bread, plantain chips, toasted corn, or even a bit of popcorn.

So let’s celebrate this recognition of encebollado, which is not only a symbol of our cuisine but also a bond that unites families and cultures with every bite. And, of course, always ensuring it’s produced sustainably and responsibly…

¡Fue una fiesta de sabores, historia y cultura!

Roberto Aguirre hijo actual Director de Operaciones de NIRSA dio la bienvenida al evento recordándonos que desde 2007, osea, hace 17 años!! La empresa empezó a enlatar este delicioso platillo guayaco,

su fama ha crecido y el año pasado estuvimos en el ranking de la mejor sopa del mundo! 🌍🍲
y hace pocas semanas atras incluso estuvo en el National Geographic Food Festival! 🌎✨

Pero el encebollado tiene raíces más profundas: antes era conocido como picante de yuca o picante de pescado, y por eso servido en las tradicionales picanterías y No podemos olvidar sus propiedades curativas para el temido “chuchaqui” —una verdadera maravilla culinaria y con beneficios.

Durante el evento, escuchamos a una antropóloga y a un historiador, quienes revelaron que el encebollado tiene antecedentes históricos fascinantes, incluso desde la cultura Valdivia en forma de sopa de pescado. 🏺🍲

En palabras del Ministro de turismo, el encebollado es una forma de unir a la familia,
ya sea con pan, chifle, tostado o incluso con un poco de canguil.

Así que, celebremos juntos este reconocimiento al encebollado, que no solo es un símbolo de nuestra gastronomía, sino un vínculo que une a familias y culturas en cada bocado. Y claro que siempre que sea de una producción sostenible y responsable…
