Government and key actors reviewed the Tuna National Action Plan for Ecuador

On July 4, the socialization Workshop of the Tuna National Plan of Action (Tuna NPOA) was held in Manta. The objective is to have a road map that guarantees a sustainable future for this fishery, which is the most important in Ecuador. With 48% of the total catches, Ecuador is the main producer of tuna in the Eastern Pacific. The country also has the largest tuna fleet in the region (115 purse seiners) and the largest installed processing capacity in Latin America (21 canneries).

For more than a year, Ecuador has been working on the preparation of the Tuna NPOA, in order to help guide and strengthen the processes leading to ensure the sustainability of the resource, which is the basis of a large industry.

The Tuna NPOA derives from the implementation of Tunacons purse seine FIP, and it is expected to become a guide that will serve the country to guide in the short, medium and long term a set of actions that guarantee an efficient administration and conservation of the fishery. The plan has several components: monitoring, information gathering, scientific research, reduction of impacts on ecosystems, control system and sanctions, and technological changes.

The Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries, Tunacons, business associations, other actors in the chain, and WWF have joined in this effort. More than 30 people attended to the workshop in Manta, representing the public and private sectors linked to the tuna value chain. During this workshop the various components were reviewed and a plan was agreed so that the actors could continue offering their contributions to enrich this planning tool. It is expected that by the second half of this year this planning process can be completed through the formal adoption of Tuna NPOA.

Ecuador is the first, and so far the only, member country of the IATTC to prepare and formally adopt a management strategy for its tuna fisheries. The Tuna NPOA will soon join similar plans that the country has been implementing to manage other important fisheries and resources. Ecuador is the only country in the region that has a FADs Management Plan, a mahi mahi NPOA, a titi shrimp NPOA and a shark NPOA, all of them created with WWF support and in full execution.
